Parish Pastoral Council

The primary responsibility of the parish pastoral council is to assist the pastor in directional and strategic planning, through a spirit of prayer and discernment, and to recommend goals and priorities in the shape of a long‐range pastoral plan. The parish pastoral council is advisory and consultative in that the council members cannot act apart from the pastor.

Parish Finance Committee

The primary responsibility of the parish finance committee is to assist the pastor in planning, reviewing, and recommending financial  income and expenditures for all the areas of parish life. Meetings are monthly. The parish runs on a fiscal year (July to June).  It is the critical function of the committee to assure the financial stability and long‐term financial health of parish finances.   Additionally, because of the size and complexity of the parish buildings and properties, short term and long term maintenance assessment and planning is a necessary exercise of stewardship.sp;

Members are appointed by the pastor for three year, staggered terms of office. The Parish Parish Finance & Physical Plant Committee was re‐constituted in January of 2004.

Parish Liturgy Committee

The primary responsibility of the Parish Liturgy Committee is to assist the pastor in planning the celebration of the sacramnts and other liturgical services, recruiting and training qualified ministers to serve the community, discussing and evaluating the various dimensions of liturgical celebrations (e.g. music, environment, involvement, participation, etc.) and recommending ways to help make the liturgies more  prayerful, beautiful, and welcoming. The appropriate documents and instructions from the Vatican and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as directives from Archbishop Vlazny and the various offices of the Archdiocese are studied for local application.  The Liturgy Committee  is advisory and consultative to the pastor.  3>

Celebrations of Faith

This a group of people who will work over a period of at least the next three years to:

1. Draw up the initial vision for intergenerational religious education in the Catholic Faith at St. Mary’s, along the lines of Generations of Faith;
2. Draw up a three year curriculum (adding a new year each year);
3. Facilitate the processes of learning and
4. Amend future experiences and emphasis in learning our Catholic Faith based on assessment and evaluation of how the program is progressing.

The "Cenerations of Faith" Committee  was constituted in January of 2004. A variety of subcommittees will be formed to carry out the work of drawing up a comprehensive plan for intergenerational faith formation in the parish over the next several years.  Contact person: Kathy Baldwin 845.845.2296.

Sacramental Preparations

• Baptisms:
  • Preparatory classes are available both in English and Spanish according to the monthly published schedule. We welcome all inquires. A Baptism cannot be scheduled until classes for parents (and if possible godparents) have been fulfilled, the necessary papers are on file in the parish office, and an on‐going relationship has been established with St. Mary Parish.   • By Archdiocesan policy, a couple needs to contact Father Philip Waibel, OSB, pastor, at least six months in advance of the proposed wedding date in order to arrange for the required preparation classes, planning of the ceremony,  music, and paperwork.  This applies to both English and Spanish wedding ceremonies. If there is a previous marriage involved, a date cannot be set until the freedom to marry in the Church is established.  Additional and detailed policies and forms are available from the parish office: 503.845.2296. Use of the parish center for receptions is scheduled and handled separately through the parish Business Manager.
• Anointing of the Sick:  
  • If you or a member of your family or a friend is planning to undergo a surgical or other medical procedure (or suffering from a chronic condition,  or undergoing long‐term therapy),  please call the parish office and Fr. Philip Waibel, O.S.B. will arrange a mutually convenient time to celebrate this sacrament. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be celebrated at the church or at your home in English or Spanish.   In emergencies or unforeseen situations, Fr. Philip will either go to local hospitals or care centers or arrange with local priests in the area. The parish also arranges communal celebrations several times during the year. For further information, please call the parish office: 503.845.2296.
• Reconciliation / Penance:
  • In addition to the weekly scheduled times (Saturday from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.) the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance can be celebrated individually by calling the parish office at 503.845.2296. The parish arranges for communal celebrations of reconciliation during the seasons of Advent and Lent, with individual confession. Please make note of these dates and make every effort to atttend when they are announced.

Other Rites and Ceremonies celebrated in the Parish

Rites for the Dying; Funerals & Funeral Vigils; Receptions:

1. If a loved one is very ill or dying, please make sure the parish is notified.   In addition to the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Communion as “Viaticum” is a special and traditional means by which the Church wishes to give Eucharistic strength to the dying. And even if the person is unconscious, an “Apostolic Pardon” of sins is available for the dying person.
2. Please contact the parish when a loved one has died.  Working with the family and funeral home,  the parish will strive to make every accommodation for funerals.   Generally speaking a Funeral Mass is held at 10:00 a.m. in the parish church of St. Mary’s. (There is also an option for celebrating a Funeral outside of  Mass.)  After the funeral rites at the church, the committal rites usually  follow right away at the local cemetery, or if at another cemetery, at a later time.
3. A Vigil for the deceased is generally held the night before also at the church, but for good reasons or a previously scheduled liturgy or event at the church, the Vigil can be held at another chapel or other suitable place. The Vigil can at times include the recitation of the Rosary.
4. A Reception is often held at the parish center following the rites at the cemetery.  It can be simply coffee / juice / cookies, etc.; or if a luncheon is preferred, separate guidelines worked out by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas apply. These guidelines are available at the parish office.
