Celebrations of Faith: The Year of Faith
In an earlier column, I had mentioned the announcement by Pope Benedict regarding the Year of Faith: Year of Faith is “intended to contribute to a renewed conversion to the Lord Jesus and to the rediscovery of faith, so that the members of the Church will be credible and joy-filled witnesses to the risen Lord, capable of leading those many people who are seeking it to the door of faith.”
The Year of Faith was announced by Pope Benedict XVI last year in his apostolic letter Porta Fidei. It will begin on Oct. 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. It also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Our parish Celebrations of Faith Committee met this week to outline how we will strive to help parishioners appreciate the legacy of Vatican II and its teachings. Dr. Owen Cummings from the Seminary will be our guest speaker on October 24 for our dinner and presentation gathering.
During the next several months we will be preparing materials to be put in the bulletin and mailed to households summarizing the main points of our Catholic Faith in light of Vatican II. Those key concepts remind us that our Catholic Church is a gift from Jesus Christ: Faith and Revelation, that it is “ever ancient, ever new.” Catholic Tradition stands with Scripture in forming the one single deposit of the Faith.
Gratefully, Father Philip Waibel, OSB, Pastor

Year of Faith
Archbishop Sample has asked that the faithful in the Archdiocese, on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, June 2, join the Holy Father as he presides over a special Eucharistic Adoration. It will extend at the same time all over the world involving the cathedrals and parishes in each diocese. For an hour, at 5pm (Rome time), the whole world will be united in prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Our 7:30 AM Mass does not allow us to simultaneously join in. And so we at St. Mary’s will begin our Adoration time at 6:00 PM on Sunday with Exposition, join in the usual Rosary at 6:30 and then conclude with Benediction. Fr. Philip will preside at this special Adoration. All are invited to participate.
